6 Signs that your Newborn May be Subluxated

Subluxation is when the alignment and physiological function of the spine and surrounding tissue is altered, negatively affecting the nervous system and therefore the overall health and wellbeing of the individual. The reason why we at Tree of Life Chiropractic here in Rochester, NY are so passionate about checking and adjusting newborns, is to prevent them from dealing with the shortcomings and symptoms that are associated with subluxations. By making sure these kiddos are functioning at their best right from birth, we can give them the best opportunity to thrive and live to their fullest potential.

What causes subluxation in newborns?

Whether a baby is born naturally or intervention is needed, forces can cause stress to the fragile structure of the baby’s spine. During the natural laboring process, the baby is in a head-down position. The baby is brought into the world by the uterine muscles periodically relaxing and tightening. These contraction forces can cause stress to the head and neck area, especially when the newborn’s head is extended. The strain to the neck area is also increased through external sources such as the hands from a medical doctor during delivery. Research has shown that an estimated 60 to 90 pounds of force is applied to a baby's neck during a natural vaginal birth. This means that even the safest, smoothest deliveries can potentially misalign a baby's spine. In fact, in a study of 1,250 infants, 95% had cervical strain/subluxation from the birthing process.
